Anomaly
Florence, Italy

Design Overview
Located in a historically valued site, this academic extension challenges the use of symmetry in modern architecture within a historical context by breaking the grid with a structural anomaly. This irregularity in plan and section creates moments of spatial tension that are followed with relief.
Contextual Influences
The interior cloister within the addition lives in the center of the extension with a double-height volume space that is flooded with natural sunlight. Classical symmetry in the plan is divided evenly to create spatial boundaries for social activities. Overhead louvers filter the harsh summer conditions on the upper level in addition to providing indirect sunlight in the upstairs cafe.
