Black Box Theater
Kent, Ohio

Design Overview
The Black Box Theater’s unconventional facade will serve as a beacon for the artist community of Kent, Ohio. The organic form is an expression of the performances that the theater houses. The theater is the prime pedestrian destination for students of Kent State University and the local residents. The gallery features a two-story space to elevate the viewing experience. Two double volume height continues to the seating area of the black box theater.
Circulation
As pedestrians pass, they are visually engaged by the exposed store, lobby, and cafe areas. The outdoor seating directs people to the convertible stage which is ideal for outdoor daytime performance. The cafe curves around the seating to create a more intimate space. As guests exit the gallery, they circulate towards the gallery gift shop. The theater is located in the center of the building so that circulation wraps around it, making it the most prominent programmed space.
