Momentum Chair

The momentum chair captures the ambition that lies in the future. Its sleek edge conditions imply that the chair was originally a single sheet of constant thickness and has been scored and folded at several points to create a cantilevered seat. The volume of the seat suggests that the chair has both an exterior and interior space which are expressed through the use of differentiating materiality. An element of trust is utilized with the cantilevered seat; thus, creating an unconscious relationship between the user and the chair. The momentum chair can therefore be viewed in subjecthood instead of only being an object in the room.

Fabrication

To assemble the structurally sound cantilevered seat, the digital model of the chair was first sliced vertically with 3/4” sections to match the thickness of the plywood. The contour lines of the sliced edges were next projected onto a flat plane for CNC data entry. Two sheets of plywood were CNC cut, stacked, and clamped together to produce the chair’s substructure. The Wilsonart laminate veneer could then adhere to the sanded plywood.
